The Happiness Advantage - First Thoughts

For a number of reasons, I've been reading Shawn Achor's "The Happiness Advantage." Achor's work has been the subject of quite a bit of positive press in the educational world, and I'm finally getting the chance to dig into the underlying work. In short, it's great to read a work that focuses on the need to focus on what's positive. Natuarally the work we do often focuses on remediating the negative: narrowing achievement gaps, addressing negative behaviors, finding out why a school bus is regularly late, whatever. Much of what we talk about is the desire to make things better, which suggests: what we're doing isn't good enough . Seeing the glass as half empty is an occupational hazard sometimes. Achor's thesis reads like this: we typically believe that success comes before happiness. Once you become successful (whether it's getting a good job, earning a raise, losing weight, whatever), then you will be happy. The order of operat

#ISTE2018: I needed this

Blogging from ISTE 2018 in Chicago....... I needed to be around this group. Since the end of the school year, I haven't had much to say. Not for any particular reason - just for a while I haven't felt as though I had much to offer. Maybe just because it's the end of the first year of a Superintendency and I'm in more of a reflective mode. Until I walked into the McCormick Center for ISTE. It just felt good to be back with this group, gearing up to immerse myself in these four days. Not thinking about politics. Not thinking about the latest lunacy coming from the legislature. Not thinking about funding models. Not thinking about Every Student Succeeds Act. Just thinking about pushing learning forward. Thinking that learning (and educating) can be fun. Kindness and Community

As I'm making the rounds throughout the district, I'm sort of trying to take a "blank slate" approach to the start of the school year. Not that I don't have things that I'll always look for (i.e. relevant, engaging, authentic instruction). However, I wanted to walk through the halls of our schools and just see what jumped out at me. What am I noticing? What patterns are emerging? What I've noticed, even in the relatively few days school has been in session, is multiple instances of the power of compassion and community-building. For example... Grayslake North Football Coach Coach Sam Baker hosted a "Hearts and Minds" Football camp for some of our students with special needs on a Friday before the first varsity football scrimmage.
